# Trim a video online free
Cutshed Video trimmer is a free browser tool that runs on this device. Trim a video to a start and end time and download an MP4.
Keep the part you need. The cut is re-encoded so the first frame is the frame you asked for, not the previous keyframe.
## How to use it
- Drop an MP4, MOV, or WebM the browser can time. Start and end are seconds. The end fills in with the duration when the file loads.
- The job uses -ss and -to before the input is fully decoded into a new H.264 and AAC file. That is slower than a stream copy and more accurate. A stream copy would snap to keyframes and can start a second early.
- Three minutes or 200 MB is the limit. Longer masters belong in an editor. This page is for the clip you are about to post.
## Tips
- Set the end a few frames after the action so the last gesture is not chopped.
- If the audio pops at the cut, the source had a transient there. Trim a little earlier or fade it in your editor.
- Mute afterwards if you only wanted the picture. Trimming keeps the audio.
## FAQ
- Why re-encode instead of cutting the file?
A byte-level cut starts on a keyframe. Re-encoding starts on the timestamp you typed.
- Does this edit the original?
No. The download is a new MP4. The file you dropped is unchanged.
- Can I trim without sound?
Trim here, then run Mute video, or the other way around. Each page does one job.
## License
Encoding uses the single-thread ffmpeg.wasm build shipped with Cutshed. The JavaScript wrapper (@ffmpeg/ffmpeg and @ffmpeg/util) is MIT. The core binary is GPL-2.0-or-later because the build enables GPL components, including libx264, libmp3lame, libvorbis, and native AAC and FLAC. That license covers the encoder, not your recording.
