Frames and thumbnails
Pull a handful of frames for a storyboard, or one frame for a thumbnail start. The video element draws them. ffmpeg is not involved.
How to use it
The clip has to be a format the browser can play, usually MP4 or WebM. Choose how many frames to spread across the duration, up to 12, or type one timestamp and grab that moment.
Each still is a JPEG about 640 pixels wide. Click a still to download it. They live in memory until you pick another file or leave the page.
A frame from a compressed video can be soft or blocky. That is the source frame. This page does not enhance it. Run the upscaler on a still if you need a larger picture and can accept the look of that model.
Tips
- Grab four frames first. Twelve JPEGs of a three-minute clip are mostly the same shot.
- For a thumbnail, pause on a face with open eyes. Blink frames look closed.
- If the browser refuses the file, remux or re-encode to H.264 MP4 in the compressor, then come back.
FAQ
Are the stills full resolution?
They are scaled to 640 pixels wide so a long grab does not fill memory. They are references and thumbnail starts, not a VFX plate.
Does this download ffmpeg?
No. The video element and a canvas do the work.
Can I get a PNG with transparency?
No. Video frames are opaque JPEGs. Transparency is the background remover’s job, on a still.
