Crop and resize

Turn a horizontal clip into a vertical, a square, or a clean 16:9. The crop is centered. A face at the edge will leave the frame.

The crop is centered. A face at the edge of a horizontal frame will leave the 9:16 cut. Check the preview before you post it.

How to use it

Pick 9:16, 1:1, or 16:9, then a width of 320, 480, 720, or 1080. The height follows the aspect and is forced to an even pixel count so H.264 accepts it.

The filter crops the largest centered window of that shape, then scales. A 16:9 source going to 9:16 loses the left and right. A vertical source going to 16:9 loses the top and bottom.

Watch the preview before you post. This page cannot track a face. If the subject walks, crop a shorter section where they stay near the middle, or do it in an editor.

Tips

  • 720 wide is enough for a phone story. 1080 is for a post you will watch on a larger screen.
  • Square is the least surprising crop of a horizontal interview if both people sit near the center.
  • Compress after you crop if the new file is still over a chat limit. Cropping does not shrink the bitrate by itself.

FAQ

Can I drag the crop window?

No. The window is centered. Off-center crops need an editor with a position control.

Will a 9:16 export be taller than it is wide?

Yes. At 320 wide the frame is 320×568. At 1080 it is 1080×1920.

Is the video uploaded?

No. The crop runs in ffmpeg.wasm in the tab.

License

Encoding uses the single-thread ffmpeg.wasm build shipped with Cutshed. The JavaScript wrapper (@ffmpeg/ffmpeg and @ffmpeg/util) is MIT. The core binary is GPL-2.0-or-later because the build enables GPL components, including libx264, libmp3lame, libvorbis, and native AAC and FLAC. That license covers the encoder, not your recording.
