# Mute a video online free
Cutshed Mute video is a free browser tool that runs on this device. Export a video with the audio track removed.
Drop the sound and keep the picture. The page tries to copy the video stream. If the container will not allow that, it re-encodes the picture and still omits the audio.
## How to use it
- Choose a clip. The job asks ffmpeg to copy the video and map no audio. When the source codec cannot be copied into MP4, the page re-encodes with libx264 ultrafast and still writes no audio track.
- A silent file is what you want for a social post that will use a platform music bed, or for a screen recording whose microphone you do not want.
- The source file is unchanged. If the copy path works, the picture is the same encode. If the fallback runs, it is a new encode and can look slightly softer.
## Tips
- Check the preview with the sound on in the page. A successful mute is quiet.
- If you also need a shorter clip, trim first so the re-encode, when it happens, is shorter.
- This does not beep, bleep, or duck. It removes the track.
## FAQ
- Is the audio recoverable from the download?
No. The new file has no audio track. Keep the original if you might want the sound later.
- Why would it re-encode?
Some codecs and odd pixel formats cannot be copied into a plain MP4. The fallback still produces a silent file.
- Does mute upload the video?
No.
## License
Encoding uses the single-thread ffmpeg.wasm build shipped with Cutshed. The JavaScript wrapper (@ffmpeg/ffmpeg and @ffmpeg/util) is MIT. The core binary is GPL-2.0-or-later because the build enables GPL components, including libx264, libmp3lame, libvorbis, and native AAC and FLAC. That license covers the encoder, not your recording.
