Pick a format, a quality, and a longest edge. The browser encodes it. JPG flattens transparency onto white.
How to use it
JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF are written with canvas.toBlob. Quality applies to the lossy formats. The longest edge can be 640, 1280, 1920, or 2560, and smaller sources are not enlarged.
HEIC and HEIF are refused. The ffmpeg build in this site has no libheif, and a separate HEIC codec is a large LGPL binary that does not fit the commercial-license rule used for the rest of the tools. Export JPG or PNG from the phone, then convert here.
AVIF depends on the browser. If this browser cannot encode AVIF, the page says so. WebP and JPG are the reliable choices.
Tips
- WebP at 0.8 and a 1280 edge is enough for a blog image.
- PNG when you need the transparency you just cut with the background remover.
- Do not convert a tiny JPG to PNG expecting it to get sharper. The pixels are the same.
FAQ
Why is there no HEIC?
Decoding HEIC needs libheif or a platform decoder this page cannot rely on, and the practical WASM builds are large and LGPL. Convert on the phone, then use JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF here.
Will AVIF always work?
Only if the browser implements AVIF encoding. Chrome does. If toBlob returns nothing, pick WebP or JPG.
Is the image uploaded?
No.
