Cutshed vs Canva’s video editor
Last checked October 2026.
What Canva’s editor is for
Cutshed publishes 26 free browser tools. Vocal removal, audio and video trims, compression, format conversion, background removal, upscaling, subtitles, and a timeline editor run in the tab. The file you open in those tools is not uploaded. There is no account and no watermark on a free export. Studio is separate, and it is the only paid part of the site. A Studio job sends the prompt, and a reference only when the model accepts one, to the provider. The credit price is the provider cost times 1.5, rounded up to the nearest 5. Packs are $5 for 400, $10 for 850, and $25 for 2,250. Credits stay on the account until they are spent. A failed or blocked generation puts them back. An unused pack is not refunded, except where the law requires it. The default clip, a 5-second Seedance 2.0 Mini at 480p, is 30 credits. Seedance 2.5 at 720p is 175 credits for 5 seconds, which is $2.19 on the $5 pack, $2.06 on the $10 pack, $1.94 on the $25 pack.
Canva’s video editor page describes a free drag-and-drop editor: trim and crop, captions, stock, and collaboration. Free elements can export without a watermark. Elements marked Pro can watermark a Free export. Canva also describes a large library of free templates. The pricing page is region-specific, and the copy we could fetch did not lock a Pro dollar amount, so this comparison does not invent one. Read canva.com/pricing for the plan where you are.
Canva’s background-remover help says photo background removal with Canva AI is a paid-plan feature, and that video background removal is available in the editor for clips under 10 minutes. Cutshed’s still-image remover is free and on device. Cutshed’s editor does not remove a video background.
Where Canva is clearly ahead
Canva is better at templates, stock, brand kits, and collaboration. A birthday invite, a classroom video, or a social post that starts from a template will be faster in Canva than on a blank Cutshed timeline. Shared editing is a Canva feature. Cutshed has no shared file and no brand kit.
Cutshed is better when the footage should stay local, when you need utilities Canva is not trying to be (a vocal stem, a BPM read, an on-device subtitle file you can hand to another editor), and when a free export must not depend on whether an element in the design was marked Pro. The Cutshed editor’s titles use a font shipped with the site. They are not a template marketplace.
Using both
A reasonable split is to do the sensitive cut in Cutshed, export an MP4 you are allowed to upload, and finish the template, the stock b-roll, and the brand frame in Canva. Or do the opposite: design in Canva, then bring a downloaded file back to Cutshed for a local compress or a GIF. Neither direction requires Studio.
If you want Cutshed to generate the picture instead, that is Studio, from the packs above, and the prompt leaves the machine. Canva has its own AI tools under its own plan. Compare those on Canva’s pricing page, not from this one.
The free Cutshed tools around the editor are worth naming, because they are the part Canva is not trying to copy. You can pull frames, compress toward a file-size limit, shift subtitle timing, or upscale a still on device, then bring only the file you mean to publish into Canva. That split keeps the rushes local and still lets Canva do the template.

FAQ
Is the Cutshed editor as full as Canva’s?
No. Canva is ahead on templates, stock, brand kits, and collaboration. Cutshed is a local timeline plus a set of single-purpose tools.
Will a Canva Free export have a watermark?
Canva says free elements export without one, and that Pro elements can watermark a Free export. Cutshed does not add a watermark to a free export.
How much is Canva Pro?
We are not quoting it. The price depends on the region and the page we fetched did not give a single dollar figure we should repeat. Use canva.com/pricing.
Cut the file locally
Use the timeline for a simple edit, or the thumbnail maker if you only need a still.
