# How to extract audio from a video (MP4 to MP3) for free
Published November 2, 2026 .
Open Video to MP3, drop an MP4, MOV, WebM, or MKV you have the rights to use, pick a bitrate, and download the MP3. The picture is discarded. The job runs in the browser and nothing is uploaded. Files over 250 MB are refused.
The tool for this is Video to MP3 . It takes the audio track already in the file and encodes it with LAME at a constant bitrate. There is no loudness pass and no noise reduction. Use the original export, not a video that has already been crushed for chat. Use your own videos, or videos you have the rights to.
The first run downloads a single-thread ffmpeg build, about 31 MB, and caches it. Later jobs reuse that copy. The file you dropped stays as it was. Keep the original video.
## Steps
- Drop a video you can use Open Video to MP3 and drop an MP4, MOV, WebM, or MKV. The page discards the picture. Phone videos in MP4 or MOV are the usual case. This is for your own videos, or for videos you have the rights to.
- Pick 128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps The bitrate menu opens on 192 kbps. 128 kbps is enough for speech. 192 kbps is the default for a music bed you will put under a YouTube video. 320 kbps is for when someone else will master or archive the file. 256 kbps sits on the menu between those two. The page does not give 256 its own job.
- Wait for the extract Click Extract MP3. The command is a straight extract: no video stream, LAME at the constant bitrate you picked. The first run downloads the single-thread ffmpeg build, about 31 MB. If the video has no audio track, ffmpeg fails and the page shows the encoder message. A screen recording muted at export is the usual cause.
- Download the MP3 The status line reports the MP3 size and the bitrate. Download that file. It is a new MP3. The video you dropped is unchanged. If you will separate vocals next, 192 kbps or higher gives the model more to work with than 128.
## Which bitrate to pick
## Which bitrate to pick
Match the bitrate to the destination. Speech for a podcast host is fine at 128 kbps. A music bed you will upload to YouTube is happier at 192 kbps, which is also the default. Choose 320 kbps when someone else will master or archive the file and you do not want another generation of loss on top of the camera audio. 256 kbps is available. The page does not describe a separate job for it.
The encoder can only keep what is in the file. A 192 kbps MP3 made from a tiny social upload will sound like that upload. Start from the original export. Play the preview before you send the file. A wrong audio track in a multi-track export shows up immediately.
## Need WAV, M4A, FLAC, or OGG instead?
Audio converter is the other page when the download should not be an MP3 at a bitrate you pick. It accepts audio, or a video if you only want the soundtrack, and drops the picture with -vn. The outputs are WAV, MP3, M4A, FLAC, and OGG. WAV and FLAC are lossless. MP3 on that page is libmp3lame at 192 kbps, M4A is AAC at 160 kbps, and OGG is libvorbis at quality 5. Opus is not offered.
Files over 15 minutes or 80 MB are refused there, so the tab does not run out of memory. Use WAV when the next tool is the trimmer, the volume booster, or the noise remover. Video to MP3 is the page that lets you choose 128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps, and it allows files up to 250 MB.
## Cut just the part you need
Audio trimmer takes a WAV, MP3, M4A, FLAC, or OGG. You type a start and an end in seconds. Each cut gets a 10 ms fade. The WAV download is 16-bit PCM, written with Web Audio, and that path does not load ffmpeg. The MP3 download is libmp3lame at 192 kbps. The file has to stay under 15 minutes or 80 MB.
Trim the audio after you have extracted it, when you only need a section of the soundtrack. The trimmer does not take the original video. It takes the audio file.
## Clean up the sound afterwards
Extraction does not improve the audio. Noise, clipping, and room tone stay. Noise remover is an RNNoise speech denoiser. It turns down steady hiss, fan noise, and room tone on a voice. It is a poor fit for music. It does not remove a door slam, a cough, or another one-off sound. The download is a WAV.
Vocal remover splits a song into vocals and instrumental. Use that when the job is a song, not a voiceover. The extract itself does neither of those cleanups.
## Troubleshooting
If ffmpeg fails and the page shows the encoder message, the usual cause is a video with no audio track. Screen recordings muted at export are the common case. The page cannot invent a soundtrack that was not in the file.
Files over 250 MB are refused on Video to MP3. Video trimmer will not take that file either. It stops at 3 minutes or 200 MB. Export an audio mixdown from your editor when the picture is huge and you only wanted the sound. If the clip is already under the trimmer's 3 minute and 200 MB limit, cut it there first, then extract the MP3.
A wrong track in a multi-track export is a source problem, not a bitrate problem. Play the preview on the page before you download. If the wrong dialogue is in the file, go back to the editor and export the mix you meant.
## Want the reverse?
Mute video is the opposite job. It exports the video with the audio track removed. The page copies the video stream when the container allows it, and otherwise re-encodes with libx264. The source file is unchanged. Keep the original if you might want the sound later. The muted download has no audio track to extract.
## Captions or a transcript
The next step, if you want captions or text from the audio, is Subtitles or Transcript . Subtitles writes an SRT or VTT. Transcript turns the words into a post. Both run in the browser and do not upload the file.
## Do this part in Cutshed
- Video to MP3 Extracts an MP3 at 128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps. The picture is discarded. Files over 250 MB are refused. Nothing is uploaded.
- Audio converter WAV, MP3 at 192 kbps, M4A, FLAC, or OGG when you do not want the Video to MP3 bitrate menu. 15 minutes or 80 MB.
- Audio trimmer Cuts a start and end, with a 10 ms fade, and downloads WAV or a 192 kbps MP3. Under 15 minutes or 80 MB.
- Noise remover RNNoise for steady hiss, fan, and room tone on a voice. A poor fit for music. The download is a WAV.
- Vocal remover Splits a song into vocals and instrumental.
- Mute video The opposite job. The download is the video with the audio track removed. The source file stays as it was.
- Video trimmer Cuts a short clip before you extract. The limit is 3 minutes or 200 MB, so it will not accept a file Video to MP3 already refused for size.
- Subtitles The next step when you want captions from the audio. The media stays on this device.
## FAQ
- How do I extract audio from a video?
Open Video to MP3, drop an MP4, MOV, WebM, or MKV, pick 128, 192, 256, or 320 kbps, and download the MP3. The picture is discarded. The job runs in the browser. Nothing is uploaded. Files over 250 MB are refused.
- How do I convert an MP4 to MP3?
Drop the MP4 on Video to MP3. The menu opens on 192 kbps. Click Extract MP3 and download the file. The same page also takes MOV, WebM, and MKV. It does not improve the recording.
- Is the video uploaded to get the audio?
No. The file is read by the browser and handed to the WASM module in memory. Nothing is posted to a server. The first run downloads a single-thread ffmpeg build, about 31 MB, and caches it.
- Does extracting the audio improve it?
No. It copies the audio track that is already in the file and encodes it as MP3 at the bitrate you pick. There is no loudness pass and no noise reduction. Noise, clipping, and room tone stay.
- Which formats can I get audio from?
Video to MP3 accepts MP4, MOV, WebM, and MKV, and the download is an MP3. For WAV, M4A, FLAC, or OGG, use Audio converter. That page does not offer Opus, and it refuses files over 15 minutes or 80 MB.
- Is it free?
Yes. Video to MP3 is a free browser tool. It does not spend Studio credits. The first run downloads the encoder, about 31 MB, and later jobs reuse that copy.
- Does it work on a phone?
Phone videos in MP4 or MOV are the usual files, and the page accepts them. The encoder is the single-thread ffmpeg build in the tab. That build does not need SharedArrayBuffer by itself. The site still sends isolation headers because the AI tools do. A file over 250 MB is refused. This page does not publish a separate phone size limit.
Files stay on this device.
Free tools never upload the file you open. Studio is the only paid part of the site, and the only place a prompt is sent to a video model.
