# How to compress a video for Discord
Published October 30, 2026 .
Open Compress video, drop the clip, and choose Discord 10 MB or Discord 25 MB. The page sets a video bitrate from that budget and the duration, reserves 64 kbps for AAC, and re-encodes in the browser. Nothing is uploaded. The file can land a little over or well under the number you picked.
A chat attachment has to be small enough to send. Compress video is built for that. The size menu opens on Discord 10 MB. Discord 25 MB, 50 MB, and Custom are the other choices. Custom takes a number of megabytes from 0.2 to 200. The default custom value is 8.
The job runs in ffmpeg.wasm in the tab. The first run downloads that runtime and caches it. The clip itself is not uploaded. The download is a new MP4. The file you dropped stays as it was.
## Steps
- Trim or crop before you compress A shorter clip spends the same byte budget on fewer seconds, so the picture stays sharper. Video trimmer cuts a start and end and re-encodes that span. Crop and resize center-crops to 9:16, 1:1, or 16:9 when the frame is the problem, not the length. Both stay in the browser. The compressor itself accepts a file up to 3 minutes or 200 MB.
- Pick Discord 10 MB or Discord 25 MB Those two labels are presets on the size menu, next to 50 MB and Custom. The page treats the number as mebibytes: it multiplies megabytes by 1024 times 1024 times 8 to get a bit budget, then divides by the duration. A clip shorter than half a second is divided as if it were half a second, so a tiny file does not request an absurd bitrate.
- Let the page set the bitrate and the width 64 kbps is reserved for AAC audio. What remains is the video bitrate, and it cannot fall below 80 kbps. After that number is rounded to whole kbps, a target under 500 caps the width at 640, a target under 1500 caps it at 1280, and 1500 or above caps it at 1920. The scale filter uses the smaller of that cap and the source width, so a small source is not stretched. The encoder is libx264 ultrafast, yuv420p, with maxrate equal to the video target.
- Read the finished size before you send it The status line reports the download size and the video kbps it aimed at. Keyframes and the audio track still take space, so the file can land a little over the budget or well under it. A clip that is already smaller than the target is not padded up to fill it. If the result is still too big, shorten the clip and run it again.
## What the bitrate math actually does
The formula is video kbps = round(max(80000, budget bits per second minus 64000) / 1000). Budget bits per second is megabytes times 1024 times 1024 times 8, divided by the duration in seconds. Ten megabytes over 8 seconds is a 10422 kbps video target, so the width cap stays at 1920. The same 10 MB over 30 seconds is 2732 kbps, still a 1920 cap. Over 90 seconds it is 868 kbps, and the width cap drops to 1280. Over 3 minutes, the tool's longest clip, 10 MB is 402 kbps and the width cap is 640.
Twenty-five megabytes over 60 seconds is 3431 kbps, width cap 1920. A custom 0.2 MB target on a 3 minute clip hits the floor: the video target is 80 kbps and the width cap is 640. That floor is why a tiny budget does not become a slideshow of zero-bitrate frames. It is still a soft picture. Raise the budget or cut the length if you need the face to stay readable.
Shorter is the practical lever. The tool page says a 10 MB budget on 8 seconds looks fine and the same budget on 3 minutes does not. The numbers above are that claim, measured from the formula in the page.
## GIF, mute, and what not to expect
A GIF has no audio. Video to GIF caps a selection at 15 seconds, builds a 256-color palette, and is often heavier per second than an MP4 at the same moment. Use it for a short silent loop. For a clip someone has to watch with sound, stay on the compressor and send the MP4.
Mute video drops the audio track. The compressor does not give those bits to the picture. It always subtracts 64 kbps for AAC and always asks ffmpeg for an AAC track at 64 kbps. Muting first does not raise the video target, and a file that no longer has an audio stream can fail that encode. Mute when you want silence. Do not mute as a way to buy sharpness.
Discord's own help does not settle on one upload number. The File Attachments FAQ says the company is experimenting with sizes and, as of August 2026, describes a 20 MB free limit, with Nitro Basic at 50 MB and Nitro up to 1 GB: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/25444343291031-File-Attachments-FAQ . The account-caps table on another Discord help page still lists 10 MB for a base account and 500 MB for Nitro: https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/33694251638295-Discord-Account-Caps-Server-Caps-and-More . Because those pages disagree, this guide does not treat one of them as today's cap. The compressor's Discord 10 MB and Discord 25 MB presets are the common targets the tool names, not a promise that your account will accept the file.
## Do this part in Cutshed
- Compress video Presets for Discord 10 MB, Discord 25 MB, and 50 MB, plus a custom megabyte target. Encoding stays in the browser.
- Video trimmer Cuts a start and end before you spend the byte budget on seconds you do not need.
- Crop and resize Center-crops to 9:16, 1:1, or 16:9 when the frame, not the length, is what has to change.
- Video to GIF Makes a silent GIF up to 15 seconds. A longer moment belongs in the compressed MP4.
- Mute video Removes the audio track. It does not hand the compressor's 64 kbps audio reserve back to the picture.
## FAQ
- How do I compress a video for Discord?
Open Compress video, drop the file, and choose Discord 10 MB or Discord 25 MB. The page re-encodes an MP4 in the browser and shows the finished size in the status line. Nothing is uploaded.
- Will a Discord 10 MB preset land under 10 MB?
It aims at that budget. The last byte is not guaranteed. Keyframes and the 64 kbps AAC track still take space, so check the status line before you send the file. A clip that is already smaller is not padded up to 10 MB.
- Why does a long clip look soft at 10 MB?
The same byte budget is spread across more seconds. Ten megabytes over 8 seconds targets 10422 kbps of video. Over 3 minutes it targets 402 kbps and caps the width at 640. Trim first if you need a sharper picture.
- Does muting the video make the picture sharper?
No. The compressor always reserves 64 kbps for AAC and always requests an AAC track. Mute video removes sound from its own download. It does not increase the compressor's video bitrate.
- Should I send a GIF instead of an MP4?
Only for a short silent loop. Video to GIF has no audio, uses 256 colors, and stops at 15 seconds. A clip with speech or a longer moment should stay an MP4 from the compressor.
Files stay on this device.
Free tools never upload the file you open. Studio is the only paid part of the site, and the only place a prompt is sent to a video model.
