Audio converter

One encoder, five outputs. Drop audio or a video if you only want the soundtrack, pick a format, and download the result from this tab.

ffmpeg runs locally (31 MB the first time). WAV and FLAC are lossless. MP3, M4A, and OGG are lossy, so convert from the original rather than from a file you already crushed.

How to use it

WAV and FLAC are lossless. MP3 is libmp3lame at 192 kbps, M4A is AAC at 160 kbps, and OGG is libvorbis at quality 5. Video inputs are accepted and the picture is dropped with -vn.

Convert from the least-compressed file you have. Turning a 64 kbps MP3 into FLAC does not invent the missing detail. It only wraps the same noise in a larger file.

The first conversion downloads ffmpeg, about 31 MB, and later conversions reuse it. Files over 15 minutes or 80 MB are refused so the tab does not run out of memory.

Tips

  • Use WAV when the next tool is the trimmer, the volume booster, or the noise remover.
  • Use M4A when you need a small file that still sounds fine in a timeline.
  • OGG is the right pick for a web player that already supports Vorbis and you want to skip MP3 licensing questions on your own site.

FAQ

Which formats are missing?

Opus is inside the ffmpeg build, but this page keeps the list to WAV, MP3, M4A, FLAC, and OGG so the choice stays obvious. WMA and proprietary phone containers are not targets.

Does a video conversion keep the picture?

No. This page exports audio only. Use the video tools if you need the frames.

Why does FLAC come out larger than the MP3 I dropped in?

FLAC stores what the decoder heard. It cannot recover frequencies the MP3 already threw away.

License

Encoding uses the single-thread ffmpeg.wasm build shipped with Cutshed. The JavaScript wrapper (@ffmpeg/ffmpeg and @ffmpeg/util) is MIT. The core binary is GPL-2.0-or-later because the build enables GPL components, including libx264, libmp3lame, libvorbis, and native AAC and FLAC. That license covers the encoder, not your recording.
